A pit up to circa 35 metres in diameter was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1971, on the west-facing slopes east of Hook, Chardstock parish.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey. The pit is therefore interpreted as the remains of an extractive pit, probably a chalk pit of post-medieval to 19th century date that had passed out of use by the late-19th century. The pit appears to be bisected by a field boundary, potentially of medieval origin, and is possibly evidence of two semi-circular pits flanking the boundary.
The earthworks were not identifiable as earthworks on digital images visualised from photogrammetrically derived elevation data captured in 2014 and have possibly been levelled.
