An oval pit circa 38 by 30 metres in size was visible as an earthwork and cropmark on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, on the west-facing slopes south of Burridge, Chardstock parish.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey. The pit is therefore interpreted as the remains of an extractive pit, probably a chalk pit of post-medieval to 19th century date that had passed out of use by the late-19th century.
The pit was visible as very slight earthworks on digital images visualised from photogrammetrically derived elevation data captured in 2014, and has possibly been partly levelled.
