Summary

One of a series of hut circles forming part of settlement. Hut circle has an internal diameter of 4.8-5.2 metres with a possible entrance in the east side. There is a semi-circular annexe on the north side of the hut.

Full description

Ministry of Public Building and Works, 10/03/1970, Hut Circle Village 600 yds SE of Swincombe (Schedule Document). SDV356121.

[One of a] series of hut circles associated with an extensive field wall system comprising presumably one economic and social unit. Hut c: 18 feet diameter. Cavity wall construction. Field wall adjacent - possible porch.

Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England, 26/07/1988, RCHME Site Visit (Report - Survey). SDV356898.

Site visit 26th July 1988. Hut circle P. SX64757225. Internal diam 4.8-5.2 metres. Walling remains of rubble but on the south and north-west arcs are clear remains of double-facing. There is an annexe of semi-circular form on the north side with maximum internal dimensions of 3.4 by 1.5 metres. Wall width between edge stones is 1.2-1.6 metres but elsewhere rubble is spread up to 2.3 metres. Wall height is 0.3-0.6 metres internally and 0.25-0.45 metres externally. The interior of the hut circle is level and there is a short scarp 1.3 metres long by 0.4 metres high separating it from the annexe. Some scattered stone lies inside. A slight break in the e wall possible marks an entrance site. Condition is good.
