HER Number:MDV63768
Name:Tin streamworks within Long Park Wood, Cornwood

Evidence of tinworking streamwork to the east of the piall river in 'long park wood' (bruce).

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

The earthworks correspond with land parcels 411, 412, 415 and 415a, recorded as ‘Tin Park’, ‘Long Park Wood’, ‘Lower Run’ and ‘Lower Run Wood’, respectively.

Earthworks of sub-oval and irregularly shaped pits, ditches and mounds are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1966 and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The earthworks are mostly random in form. They occupy an area of circa 4.6 hectares along the eastern side of Piall River, from Slade Viaduct in the north to Stert Bridge in the south. The northern extent of the earthworks corresponds with a possible area of workings depicted on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map. The earthworks occupy land parcels 411, 412, 415 and 415a on this map, which are recorded as ‘Tin Park’, ‘Long Park Wood’, ‘Lower Run’ and ‘Lower Run Wood’, respectively, on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. Transcription of these earthworks was carried out primarily using Simple Local Relief and Positive Openess lidar visualisations. Given their complexity and in places subtle nature, not all visible earthworks have been transcribed and an extent of area polygon has been used to define the approximate limit of the earthworks. Their character and form support the interpretation they represent the extractive pits, stream channels and associated spoil heaps of a possible medieval or post-medieval alluvial tin streamworks which had passed out of use by the mid to late 19th century, by which time the area had been given over to woodland. Water used in the washing and processing of the tin-ore was probably sourced from Piall River, via a series of leats. The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to dense tree cover. The earthworks are likely associated with a streamworks (MDV63767) recorded to the immediate south. Earthworks of numerous other streamworks have also been recorded in this area.
