Full description

Read, M., 2001, Meadowsfoot Beach, Mothecombe (Report - Survey). SDV140212.

Reed, S. J., 2002, Archaeological Survey and Recording at Meadowsfoot Beach, Mothecombe, South Devon, 2 (Report - Survey). SDV140214.

Approximately 20m to north east of the ditch (PRN 64836), in the section west of the stream, a group of three features were observed, cut into weathered bedrock. Since investigation was limited to their exposure on the face of the eroded deposit, their exact nature could not be determined, but they have been interpreted as pits, gullies or ditches. Pit 516 lay c20m north east of the ditch. It was U-shaped, 0.35m wide and cut 0.22m into bedrock. The fill comprised sandy clay with occasional charcoal fragments. No finds. Pit 518, 0.4m north east of 516, was a shallow scoop, 0.4m wide and cut 0.1m into bedrock. The fill comprised sandy clay containing abundant small charcoal fragments. No evidence of in situ burning. The fill sample contained charred wheat, barley and oats. No finds. Pit 519, 1.5m north east of 518, measured 2.1m wide, 0.55m deep, cut into bedrock. It contained sandy clay with frequent inclusions of charcoal and small slate fragments. Two flat stones within the fill appeared to have been subject to burning, but no evidence to suggest that this took place in situ. Samples from one fill contained charred oats, barley, wheat, hazelnut shell and weed seeds.
