Summary

One of a number of hut circles associated with a possible Iron Age settlement east of Sherwell on Corndon Down. A hut circle which has a diameter 7m with a Level interior. Edge set slab in situ. Clear circle of turf covered stone standing to no more than 0.4m, and located at the junction of two prehistoric walls with no visible entrance. Set within the Dartmeet parallel reave system.

Four hut circles with a field system; "heavily lyncheted" within the modern farm enclosure. One of the Dartmoor settlements which are Iron Age, but which could have started in the Bronze Age.

Beeson, M. M. R. + Masterman, M. C. H., 1979, An Archaeological Survey of Enclosed Land in Widecombe-In-The-Moor Parish, 713 (Report - Survey). SDV337078.

(Site visited 15/5/1979). Together with PRN 6455, 6456 and 26345 this hut circle forms a group of four dwellings with a field system which is heavily lyncheted within the modern farm enclosure. It is Iron Age but could have been started in the Bronze Age. Other details: Volume 4.

(02/06/1980) On a south-west facing slope centred at SX681746, are the remains of six hut circles, now mainly within modern enclosures which themselves incorporate remains of a parallel reave system (PRN 6030). The majority are Type 2 huts and are integrated within the boundaries of the reave system. The interiors measure between 4.3 metres and 8.0 metres in diameter with walling averaging 1.2 metres wide and 0.7 metres high. The entrances, where visible, are mainly to the south. The general condition of the huts are poor. (see plan and ground photograph)

One of at least ten hut circles in the Sherwell prehistoric settlement, which consists of a number of fields within the reave system, many with a single hut circle built at the edge or corner.
Hut circle 5 measures 8.4 meters in diameter and is constructed of massive stones, some of which are still supporting the existing wall. It lies just inside the uphill edge of the enclosed area. Other details: Map 15, 1.
