Summary

'symes cottage' in broadclyst is a c17 farmhouse on the edge of the village. Originally of a three cell cross-passage two storey plan with axial stacks + stairs probably rising from the cross-passage. In the c18 a barn was added at the north end of the rear elevation + a linhay was added in the late c18/c19. In the mid c19 the property was divided into two cottages but became one dwelling again in the late 1970's. The walls are of rendered rubble sandstone under a half-hipped thatch roof. The barn + linhay have now been converted to dwellings (nt).
