Full description

Exeter Archaeology, 2002, An Archaeological Assessment of a Proposed Development at Monkerton, Pinhoe, Exeter, 1-4,6-7 (Report - Assessment). SDV344512.

An archaeological assessment undertaken by Exeter Archaeology in 2002 prior to a proposed development at Monkerton in Pinhoe found a possibly medieval field system had existed at least until 1839. The area is shown as ten small fields on a Tithe Survey of 1811 & on the 1839 Pinhoe Tithe Map which had been reduced to five fields by 1890. The regular arrangement of field boundaries suggest planned enclosure & field names such as 'Headlands' & 'Furlong' suggest a medieval origin. The surviving field boundaries are mostly rounded earth banks c2-3m wide x 1-1.5m high surmounted by a mostly hazel hedge. 'Harts Lane' to the north of the site may have been the medieval access to the fields whilst 'Hollow Lane' to the south may be part of a wider route.

(Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV23923.

A geophysical survey was undertaken at the proposed St Luke's School site in 2003 & the western part of the site particularly revealed the pattern of existing & former field divisions.
