Summary

Town Mill, built circa 1846 but destroyed by fire in 1888 and presumably rebuilt. In the mid 18th century a malt mill appears to have been to the south-west, on the south side of leat, but no buildings are shown on the site of the present mill.

Full description

"Town Mill (Corn)" marked.

'Town mill (corn)' is shown as a large building on the east side of a small yard with adjoining buildings around the rest of the yard.


Hicks, C. E., 1947, Tavistock: The Changing Scene in the Last Two Centuries, 165 (Article in Serial). SDV256401.

Two tucking or fulling mills on the north side of Lower Brook Street used the leat, one about half way along the street, which had two gardens attached, the other on the site of the present mill.

Town Mills mentioned from 1556-1763 as three gristmills and one malt mill. Described in 1997 as a late Victorian three-storey building of random stone with brick window surrounds, built after the fire.
