Roughly semi-circular pits forming a hollow circa 30 metres in diameter were visible as shallow earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, at the junction of two field boundaries at circa ST07310197.
The visible earthworks partly correspond with pit depicted on the OS First Edition 25 inch map, to the south-east of the boundary junction, annotated as Old Marl Pit.
The visible earthworks are interpreted as the remains of former extractive pits that had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century. It is unclear from the earthwork evidence alone wither the remains are of a single pit that was subsequently divided by post-medieval enclosure boundaries or pits that were dug following enclosure.
