Formerly known as Weir Head and now the highest of a group of three weirs on the Tamar. The site is first documented in the 10th century when it was associated with Tavistock Abbey.

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Marked as Weir Head, the highest point to which ordinary tides flow. A sluice is also marked.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

Also marked as a T. (?Tidal) Weir. A salmon ladder is also marked.

The Calstock Weir at Weir Head was associated with Tavistock Abbey in the 10th century but by the 12th century it had passed to Roger de Vautort as Lord of Trematon and Calstock. By 1292 the Abbot of Tavistock had taken a lease of the Calstock Hatches which became a perpetual lease in 1354. The timber weir was destroyed in 1535 under an order from Henry VIII.
