The pit is situated on the boundary of sandstone and limestone deposits.

A roughly circular pit up to circa 22m across is visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 as a shallow earthwork on the south-west facing slopes north-east of Olchard, Ideford. The pit is interpreted as a possible limestone or sandstone quarry of medieval to post-medieval date. It is depicted and annotated as ‘Old Quarry’ on the OS 1880s First Edition 25inch map and has not been transcribed by the survey.
