HER Number:MDV67261
Name:Trackway south of Great North Wood, Buckland Monachorum

Summary

Two curvilinear ditches are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019 and identified during a 2001 field survey in woodland south of Great North Wood. One ditch is tentatively interpreted as a trackway of medieval to post-medieval origin, that passed out of use prior to circa 1840. The smaller ditch is of uncertain origin but may be a second trackway.

A curvilinear ditch circa 155 metres in length and between circa 8 and 20 metres in width is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019. A second ditch between 2 and 6 metres in width and 80 metres in length is situated to the south. The ditches are parallel and orientated approximately east to west down a steep south-west facing slope in woodland south of Great North Wood.
The ditches do not correspond with any features depicted on the available historic maps. The plot is recorded as woodland in the Tithe Apportionment and has consistently been recorded as woodland subsequently.
The largest ditch aligns with a field boundary recorded to the immediate north-east (MDV114441).
The largest ditch is tentatively interpreted as a trackway or field boundary of medieval to post-medieval origin, that passed out of use prior to circa 1840. The smaller ditch may be interpreted as a trackway, or alternatively as a field boundary or drainage channel.
