Full description

Dyer, M. + Manning, P., 2000, Archaeological Assessment of Hartland Forest Golf Club and Marshall Farm, near Woolfardisworthy, North Devon (Report - Assessment). SDV336301.

A three acre arable field immediately to the west of Marshall Farm was named 'Higher Church Park' in the mid 19th century. The meaning of this name is unclear. In this context it is unlikely to refer to land beside, belonging to, or on the road to a church (no record of a chapel at marhsall has been located, although medieval chapels are recorded at Clifford to the north and Ashmansworthy to the east). However, alternative suggestions based on similar field-names elsewhere indicate the possibility of a former pre-enclosure great field (medieval open field) or, perhaps more likely, a nearby mound or barrow.
