A roughly oval pit circa 40 by 25 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks correspond with a pit depicted in this location on the OS First Edition 25 inch map annotated as Old Marl Pit. This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century. The earthwork visible on the lidar derive image is significantly larger than that depicted. The pit remains visible, albeit partly obscured by trees on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014.
