Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1950, SX69SW18, SX69SW18 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV222053.

Visited on 9th August 1950. Enclosure 'V' and eight hut circles one of five enclosures between White Hill and Small Brook. A simple enclosure of the usual Dartmoor type the walling of which is very vague and fragmentary being completely overgrown with bracken and heather. No obvious entrance. Hut 'a' (diameter 5.5 metres) wall of large turf covered stones entrance to south-south-east. Hut 'b' (diameter 5 metres) rather vague, entrance to south-west. Hut 'c' (diameter 5 metres) vague and fragmentary no obvious entrance. Hut 'd' (diameter 5 metres) as for 'c' with probable entrance to south-south-east. Hut 'e' (diameter 6 metres) wall of turf covered stones, probable entrance to south-south-east. Hut 'f' (diameter 5 metres) wall of small turf-covered stones entrance to south-south-west indicated by fallen door jamb. Hut 'g' (diameter 5 metres) remains very fragmentary, Hut 'h' (diameter 5 metres) walls vague and fragmentary there is however a well defined entrance to south-south-east.

An ovoid hut is visible, very fragmentary and hard to define. There is an internal partition in the south part of this enclosure, and there are three disjointed banks (together with two hut circles and a larger, sub-circular enclosure) at SX 6273 9078, which may once have been part of this enclosure. If the enclosure is taken to be a whole, it contains four freestanding hut circles and six hut circles attached to its perimeter walls.

Gerrard, S., 1990-2002, Monument Protection Programme. Archaeological Item Dataset., MPP 140782 (Report - Survey). SDV277946.

(14/06/1996) Simple sub-rectangular enclosure forming part of a discrete concentration of structures which together with other nucleations form a large settlement complex. Survives as a 64m by 40m area defined by an orthostatic and rubble wall measuring 1m wide and up to 0.8m high. Two hut circles are attached to the inner face of the enclosure wall and seven are linked to it.

Butler, J., 1991, Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities: Volume Two - The North, 200-202, Map 40, Figure 40.1 (Monograph). SDV219155.

Enclosure '1' is the most northerly of the Small Brook enclosures with all the hut circles on the periphery. Its peculiarly angular plan was apparently designed merely to connect the nine small huts of 3 to 4.5 metres diameter. Two other huts are located to the west and south-west of the enclosure.
