Summary

A survey of the redundant buildings at 'hearn farm' was undertaken by m watts in 2003. 'hearn farm' was first mentioned as the home of 'john de la hurne' in 1231. It has also been known as 'hearne', 'hernes', 'hern' & 'hurn'. In 1770 it was described as a 'good dwelling house, barn, pound-house, linneys & other offices, 82 acres of arable & pasture, 4 acres of orchard & 20 acres of moor'. The farmhouse is of a typical three room with cross passage plan. The farm buildings of local stone & cob surround a central yard. They include a threshing barn on the northeast side of the yard with some c17 features. A round house for a horse engine was added between c1888-1905 but was superseded by a fixed engine. The linhay to the north west appears to be of slightly later construction & has been re-roofed. The l-shaped building to the southeast of the barn housed the cider making equipment but had later been used as a cart shed & stables (watts).
