Summary

Earthworks of sub-oval and irregularly shaped pits and banks, interpreted as post-medieval or 19th century quarries with associated spoil heaps, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019. The quarries had probably passed out of use by the mid-19th century.

Sub-oval and irregularly shaped earthworks of pits and banks, between 10-17 metres long, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019.
The earthworks do not correspond with any pit features in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map which depicts this area as an orchard. One of the pits at SX43806458 does, however, correspond with an earthwork labelled as ‘Quarry’ on the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as post-medieval or 19th century quarries and spoil heaps that had probably passed out of use by the mid-19th century, by which time the redundant workings had been given over to orchard. They are possibly associated with workings recorded in proximity to the north-west (MDV47561).
The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover.
