Pearce's Shaft at Gawton Mine recommended to be fenced in 2003. Other details: Fig 5,14.

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 33 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

Pearce's shaft appears to be an early one, as there is no mention of its sinking in the documentary accounts of the 1850s. It accessed the main stopes in the eastern part of Main (Copper) Lode, as evidenced by the size of the waste rock outside and down slope of the adit portal. It is unfenced and open, located uphill approximately 5 metres east of the leat. It is approximately 2.1 metres wide and 2 metres long to a depth of about 8 metres, then inclines to the south and is not visible. The shaft opening is somewhat larger as it has been cut from the side of the hill. Other details: Figures 5-6, 21, 35, site 19.

Ordnance Survey, 2010, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV344030.
