Name:Throwleigh War memorial, St Mary's Churchyard

Summary

Cross in the churchyard in Throwleigh commemorates those who died in the First and Second World Wars. Lies on the right side of the path leading into the churchyard, not far from the lych gate. Listed in 2019. Masson Phillips (1938) identifies 'a short length of dressed stone forming part of the base of a memorial cross, with a further fragment in the yard in the churchyard at Throwleigh' as a possible cross shaft, although later (1959) states this identification to be doubtful.

Masson Phillips, E. N., 1938, The Ancient Stone Crosses of Devon: Part II, 305 (Article in Serial). SDV6308.

Fragments of a cross in the churchyard of Throwleigh Church. In the churchyard is a short length of dressed stone forming part of the base of a memorial cross. Further fragment in the yard. The pinnacles of the tower were found to consist of four similar stones, each standing on a short square base.
