Name:WHEEL PIT in the Parish of Gulworthy

Summary

Site of a c19 wheelpit shown on c19 maps. A large water filled depression 10m x 6m may mark the location of this pit or a flooded adit. A 1920s iron water pipe 25m long x 0.5m wide runs from sx43887255 to sx43857253 along the western side of an excavated cutting following the alignment of the 1840s aqueduct from the leat to the water wheel. A rectangular stone & concrete plinth 2.8m x 2.1m x 1.5m high is located to the southeast at sx43877253 & may have supported machinery during the last working of the mine in the 1920s. The plinth is of similar construction to feature sx47sw/527/3 & they may represent supports for an aerial ropeway (buck).

Site of a c19 wheelpit shown on c19 maps. A large water filled depression 10m x 6m may mark the location of this pit or a flooded adit. A 1920s iron water pipe 25m long x 0.5m wide runs from sx43887255 to sx43857253 along the western side of an excavated cutting following the alignment of the 1840s aqueduct from the leat to the water wheel. A rectangular stone & concrete plinth 2.8m x 2.1m x 1.5m high is located to the southeast at sx43877253 & may have supported machinery during the last working of the mine in the 1920s. A deep, wide shaft or wheelpit will be visible from the proposed new Bedford Mine Trail. It is proposed to fence along western edge near end of new track route.
