Summary

Site of ‘engine’ or ‘north shaft’ shown on the ‘bedford united mine shaft/lodes plan’ of 1867. The shaft is located in a large field & the area was surveyed in 2003. A long dry stone revetment wall retains the rubble waste tip around the site & forms a railway line embankment. The site of the shaft was obscured by rubble & there was no sign of the balance bob or the capstan pit (buck).
