Full description

Two smaller gravel pits are depicted in close proximity to the south.

The gravel pit is visible as an earthwork pit.

The gravel pit is visible as an earthwork pit.

On south side of minor road in area of woodland, an irregularly shaped excavated area, up to circa 3 metres deep, extends circa 60 metres east/west by 20 metres north/south. The feature probably represents a former gravel pit, as there are a number of gravel pits in the vicinity. Not depicted on Ordnance Survey 1891 1:10560 map (Sheet 93NW).

A possible gravel pit of probable post-medieval to modern date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, on Woodbury Common. The irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 60 metres in length by 37 metres in width and is located in close proximity to two smaller gravel pits depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. It remains visible as an earthwork pit, albeit largely obscured by tree cover, on aerial photographs of 2000.
