Full description
Anonymous, 1923, Ancient Gravestone in Lundy, 372-3 (Article in Serial). SDV344735.
The inscription is cut about 6 millimetres deep. The surface is uneven so there is some doubt about the lettering. The stone may not have been in its original position when found. The author discusses the style of the inscription.

Site visit 18th May 1962. Inscribed stone. 1.75 metres long by 0.50 metres wide by 0.28 metres thick. Found when digging grave of Miss Amelia Heaven within ruins known as St. Helen's Chapel. Stone inscribed '(T)IGERNI-TIGERNI'. It may be dated to 600AD.The stone now lies south-east of the ruins, in a horizontal position supported on stones.

Inscription reads 'IGERNI/ITIGERNI' with the two final I's on their sides. The inscription is placed vertically down the stone and is derived from Irish Ogham.

Possible that stone had been incorporated in chapel fabric. Currently 1.15 metres tall above ground with 0.6 metres below ground. In its present state it is incomplete and lacks 3-4 characters in each line and possibly a Christian symbol. Inscription cut 6 millimetres deep. Style of lettering suggests a date of circa AD600.
