Site visit by Langham 13th July 1961. Tulocus stone discovered 8 feet from east wall of cemetery.


Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1962 - 1979, SS14NW/SW28 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV344736.

Site visit 18th May 1962. Inscribed stone found in July 1961. Inscribed 'TULLOCI'. Dated to 8th-9th century AD. Lying in an earthfast position on the east side of the graveyard. Humpbacked slab of granite, 1.8 metres long by 0.6 metres wide with the inscription on the west side.

The inscription does not read 'TULLOCI' but rather 'POTIT' preceded by a linear cross in a circle. It translates as the stone of Potitus and is late 6th century in date. In May 1981 it was llifted and set up against the wall of the old cemetery.

Late 6th century in date. Potitus is a personal name known in 4th century Britain as the grandfather of St. Patrick. Other details: 101,111.
