A survey at Charlestown Barton was undertaken in 2003 prior to development. The proposed access route would run east from the road at the site of a former smithy. Map evidence shows that the smithy existed in its largest form in 1842. By 1888 an opening appears in the centre of the range. The extant remains represent a further reduction in size. The remains comprise a small stone building with a corrugated iron roof to the south with a perimeter wall extending north to the derelict remains of the larger northern part of the building. The proposed access would pass between the two extant buildings.
