Full description

Child, P. C., 2004, Quern (Correspondence). SDV321350.

Beehive quern situated in Hartland (Stoke) church museum above the north porch. About 12 inches high and 12 inches diameter, tapering to about 6 inches diameter at the top, and flat based. A hole is drilled down the centre to put in the grain and a smaller socket low down on the side for a handle. Possibly Late Iron Age.

Upper stone of Iron Age beehive quern of 'Hunsbury' Type, with flat grinding surface and handle hole drilled through to bottom of 'hopper'. Grinding surface has worn through to handle hole. 27.5 centimetres maximum diameter.
