Full description

1880s, 25" (Cartographic). SDV321407.

Site of 'Engine House' with a detached 'Chimney' to the south shown on OS 25" (1880s) map. Three adjoining buildings are shown with rectangular enclosure to the west.

Buck, C., 2002, Devon Great Consols: Archaeological Assessment, 58-59+Figs 4,13,38 (Report - Assessment). SDV241758.

Engine house & boiler house at Wheal Maria shown on maps from 1848 which probably wound copper ore from Morris' Shaft (see PRN 56080) & by flat rods from Gard's Shaft (see PRN 3876). The 1848 map shows a tram road from this site to the dressing floors & grinder house to the west & the engine may have drawn empty trams back. The 1867 map shows an un-roofed area on the western side of the boiler house which may have been a coal store. The survey found the engine house to be a 4m long x 1m high mound of rubble with a short 1.8m section of wall 0.7m high at the northern end. At SX41847389 two large granite stones 2.1m long x 1.32m x 0.5m thick appeared to be cylinder bedstones removed from the engine house. The detached chimney to the south at SX41877386 was represented by pile of rubble 2.3m wide x 1m high with a square flue opening visible on the northern side. The possible coal store to the west was represented by very low remnants close to the edge of a later quarry. The quarry 25m wide x 4.5m deep at SX41857385 may be a 20C feature or the head of the tram road. Other details: Sites 39 + 39/1 + 40.
