Full description

Buck, C., 2002, Devon Great Consols: Archaeological Assessment, 65-66+Figs 4,13,38 (Report - Assessment). SDV241758.

House with an outbuilding to the southeast at SX41697379 shown on 19C maps & two associated paddocks. The house may have been the residence of the sluice operator for the many reservoirs & settling ponds associated with the foundry & dressing floors at Wheal Maria mine. The large foundry reservoir pond is shown to the south of the house at SX41687378 with a leat running southeast from SX41697378 to SX42027371 to Wheal Fanny (see PRN 3870). The survey found extant remains of both buildings including walls, windows, fireplace & a pit. The pond probably provided water for the foundry water wheel & sluice outlets were found in the northwest & southwest corners of the pond. The leat was traced for most of its length with a stone lined tunnel at the end. Other details: Sites 55, 55/1, 56 & 57.

Statement Heritage, 2018, Proposed extension to Foundry House, Wheal Maria, Tavistock, PL19 8P: Heritage Impact Assessment, 7 (Report - Assessment). SDV364344.

The sluice operator’s house and outbuilding were in place by 1867. They are extant but unroofed buildings with little apparent change since 2002. No sign that previously recommended consolidation actions have taken place.
The foundry wheelpit reservoir pond was first shown in 1867 as was the foundry. The surrounding bank is 1.5m to 2m high. There is no evidence of previously recommended tree management having taken place, but the feature remains legible.
