Vis=29/1/1953(os) remains have been so incorporated into farm buildings as to be now unrecognisable. The chapel is mentioned by lysons and by dean milles in the 18th century, but not listed in olivers monasticon(1846) and considered doubtful by chope (os).

Royal charter of 1189 granted chapels at harton, chaeristow and welcombe to hartland abbey, together with all the other chapels built in the parish. Possibly includes st. Clare's. Pearce further implies that the presence of a holy well, with a female saint depicted, (ss22se-006) hints at an early christian origin to the ecclesiastical activity at philham (pearce).
