The Ordnance Survey 1890 map shows two wells at the northern end of Ashculme Turbary (see also site 535).The southern well presumably would have served the two buildings shown on the map in a plot to the west of the turbary which is occupied by Chapel View on the modern Ordnance Survey 1:2500 map. These two buildings are shown on the Hemyock Tithe Map (1843) and described as cottages (Nos 714-5) in the Tithe Apportionment Ordnance Survey (1841). The site of the well was not located during the field survey at which time the area was boggy and under long tussocky grass.
