Full description

Six lead musket balls were found together in a pit excavated in an evaluation trench to the south of the main excavation area on the site of the new Combined School in Topsham. Although they are not closely datable objects and there was no associated dating evidence, they can probably be associated with activity in the English Civil War and, as such, add strength to the interpretation of a nearby post medieval enclosure as a Civil War fort or redoubt. All the balls have been fired and are so mishapen that they could not have been used again. Four of the balls have a single flattened surface, such as would result from hitting a wall. It is presumed they had been gathered up for melting down for reuse.
