'Shaft' shown on OS 252 (1880s) map as a small circular feature.

Ventilating shaft located on the New South Lode to the south of Wheal Josiah mine at Devon Great Consols. The lode was opened in 1858 & the shaft is shown on the 1867 & 1884 maps. The survey in 2002 located the shaft at the south end of a finger dump between the upper railway route (see PRN 71420) & the main Devon Great Consols Railway. The shaft of 1.75m diameter was open to 2m deep with the site of a possible capstan c5m to the west. Other details: Site 367.
