Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1855-1895, First Edition 1:500 Town Map (Cartographic). SDV338879.

Ordnance Survey Town plan of 1855-1895 states 'Bridge Buidlings On site of a Gramamr School'.


Whiting, F. E., 1948, Bideford Bridge, 133 (Article in Serial). SDV18901.

Site of the free grammar school for ten boys rebuilt in 1657 and replaced by Bridge Hall in 1882.


Department of Environment, 1973, Bideford Borough (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV15283.

Plaque in the entrance-hall of Bridge Buildings states the building 'was rebuilt ... on the site of a Bridge Hall rebuilt AD 1758 and of a Free School rebuilt AD 1657 and repaired AD 1680 and 1780 and of a Grammar School founded AD 1689'.

Grammar and commercial schools at Bridge Street, at the end of Allhalland Street. By 1868, the grammar school had only 19 pupils and was located over a cellar in which a cooper practised his trade. In 1877, new buildings were provided in North Down Road. The old buildings were pulled down, making way for the present Bridge Buildings.
