Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

A small irregular shaped building on the north side of the road junction.

Jenkinson, T., 2003 - 2005, Peter Tavy to Horrabridge via Whitchurch & Plaster Down Unclassified (Report - Survey). SDV324156.

Site visit 1st January 2005. Small hut like building at the junction of Station Road and the Tavistock to Plymouth road may have been erected by the Tavistock Turnpike Trust in the 19th century to catch travellers using the old road.

Rosevear, A., 2008, Devon Tollhouses (Un-published). SDV351734.

A 19th century toll booth on the A386, Tavistock to Plymouth road.

Hudswell, J., 2014, Toll house in Horrabridge (Correspondence). SDV356610.

This building is thought to be the last intact toll house on the Plymouth to Tavistock route.
While it has been modified by the addition of larger windows, it does retain the original cruciform shape unlike the other building in Horrabridge, a little south of this one, called ‘The Old Toll House’. This latter has been entirely incorporated into a modern rectangular bungalow with no external evidence for the original form.
The property is currently used as an antiques shop, but has been put up for sale this year, so may be subject to alterations / change of use. This building may be an appropriate property to recommend for listing on the basis of its ‘sole survivor’ status.

Ordnance Survey, 2023, Mastermap 2023 (Cartographic). SDV365227.

Google, 2025, Google Streetview 2025 (Website). SDV366288.

A small single storey stone building under a slightly projecting gable-ended slate roof, with a prominent lateral stack . It has a projecting, stone-arched doorway in the gable end facing the main Tavistock-Plymouth road and what is now a raised doorway on the Station Road end.
