Summary

Pynes Weir is first documented in 1774. It served a leat to Pynes Mill which was straightened in 1833 when the waterworks was first built. The leat still supplies water to turbines at the waterworks.

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Pynes Weir marked, from which a leat was taken to Exeter Water Works, formerly the site of Pynes Mill. The weir is shown as a coursed stone structure.

Following the construction of the Exeter Water Works in 1833 the leat was widened and straightened. It is still in use to power pumping turbines.

According to a sale notice for Pynes Mill in the Exeter Flying Post, 10th June 1774, the Lord of the Manor had to 'bear one third of the Expence of Repairing the Wear and Banks' and also had to provide the timber for the repairs.
