Bowringsleigh. Remains of elizabethan mansion. A fortified manor house probably built here by the bowring family in 15th century. Of this, the lower part of the tower and some of the other masonry are visible remains, converted into an elizabethan mansion by the gilberts, and finally "made baronial" by the ilberts in 1868-1873, by the addition of the upper parts of the tower and the gables. There is a chapel in the tower (see sub-sheet 2). The hall has a good plaster ceiling and screen (pevsner).

Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV1907.

Ref only. Considered to have minor defensive aspects (higham).

Vis=1/1/1952 (os). Information not completely accurate. First deed mentioning the house dates to circa 1450 when it belonged to the bowering family. Subsequently it passed into other ownerships. A fire about 1850 destroyed part of the east wing and the chapel; this part was rebuilt in the 1860's, when other minor alterations were made. A painting of circa 1695 shows the house much as it is today, although it had no tower. The tower and east extension are therefore modern, the tower incorporating remains of the early chapel. In an excellent state of repair (os).

Vis=est -/-/1957 (d. O. E. ). A large country house of 15th century origin, mostly rebuilt in 17th century and considerably renovated in 19th century. The top of the tower is modern, the ground stage occupied by a chapel. Irregular plan. Hall screen of 17th century date. Further details in list (doe). Information as above. Tower built circa 1850 in the style of 15th century. Screen in hall circa 1620 (hoskins).

THOMAS, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV399.

Family home of the ilberts since 1696. Has good plaster ceilings and an inlaid screen (thomas).
