Kingsbridge was once an important port with shipyards, a tide-mill, a flour mill, and a large foundry, Lidstones, of which the main building still stands.

Prior to 20th century reclamation, the line of the Dodbrooke quay wall passed through the present car park. Progressive silting made the area increasingly inconvenient for larger vessels, forcing construction of another quay further south. Other details: Figure 2, site 13.
