Woolston was a domesday manor, and in the time of henry iii belonged to the family of crispin.(lysons). Known as ulsistona in 1086 and held then by judhel of totnes. Various descents between 1241 and 1428 are given (reichel).

'woolston' is mentioned as 'wolsingthon' in 1242, 'wolseton' in 1285 and 'wolsatone' in 1312 (gover et al).
