Full description

Buck, C., 2005, Wheal Russell Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 29 (Report - Assessment). SDV336659.

Richard's Shaft (Site 22) shown on the 1867 archive maps at Wheal Russell Mine & located at the west end of the flat rod route from the water wheel (see PRN 72788). The 1867 map show a feature to the east of the shaft which may have been the winding drum & crank pit mechanism. The survey in 2005 found a concrete slab about 7 meters x 6 meters over the shaft. The shaft excavation cut into the surrounding spoil mound leaving a 4 meter high mine waste scarp on the west side & a 2.5 meter scarp on the north side. A linear spoil mound was located on the west side of the shaft with remnants of a retaining wall on the west side of a flat are to the south of the shaft. Other details: Figs 5-7.
