Full description

Buck, C., 2005, Wheal Russell Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 34-5 (Report - Assessment). SDV336659.

Impham Quay (Site 33) existed in 1712 & was used to export copper ore from the local mines. In 1714 the quay was occupied by a merchant called William Spry & accounts of 1723 confirm that Impham was used for copper storage & shipping. In 1752 a haulier was paid to transport 'fagots' to 'Impham Kee'. The quay remained in use for over 100 years when it was re-modelled to export granite from the Frementor Quarry which was brought to the quay via a horse drawn tramway (see PRN 70478) built in 1862 but had ceased operation by 1874. The Ordnance Survey map of 1884 shows the quay as being a marshy area. The survey in 2005 found the area overgrown but the substantial boulder quay wall probably built in 1862 was visible at low tide. Other details: Fig 2.
