Full description

Buck, C., 2005, Wheal Russell Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 36-7, Figs 5-7, 21 (Report - Assessment). SDV336659.

Adit (Site 37) shown on the 1867 maps which appears to be the 18th century workings referred to as taking place in Belcamore Wood. The site was probably reworked in the 19th century as part of Wheal Russell Mine. The survey in 2005 found the adit portal divided into two by a rock pillar. The lower opening was 1.1 metres wide by 1 metre high with the upper opening 1 metre wide x 4.1 metres high. Afterabout 4 metres the stope openened out to a height of 9 metres but then reduced to a variable height depending on the amounrt of rock removed.

Payne, S., 2011, Morwellham HER (Correspondence). SDV348295.

The roof has had a roof fall, just behind the entrance, but is not blocked and can be seen disappearing into the hillside.

Cornwall Archaeological Unit, 2017, South Cornwall Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey Desk-Based Assessment, 997 (Interpretation). SDV360825.

A stope, or the working out of an inclined mineral lode into the hillside, is suggestive to Buck (2005, Site 37) of 18th century or early mine working. Colin Buck records an adit portal divided into two by a rock pillar which into the hillslope opens up to a single stope.
