Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Site of a small square pond shown on 19th century map with a 'Sluice' on the southwest corner.

Buck, C., 2005, Wheal Russell Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 42 (Report - Assessment). SDV336659.

Square reservoir pond (Site 50) shown on 19th century maps to the north of the incline winder cottages. The survey in 2005 found the overgrown pond was circa 17 metres square with banks circa 1 metre high and a gap in the west which may have sited a sluice gate.

Buck, C., 2009, Project Design for Site Trenching and Archaeological Recording of Former Buildings at the Morwellham Steam Incline Winder, Devon, Appendix; Site 50; Fig 2 (Report - non-specific). SDV366274.

This feature can be seen on the archive maps from 1867 onwards. It is likely to have been lined with clay, and it is likely that there are still underground tunnels that housed pipes to take water from the pond to the steam engine and boiler house. There would also have been a pipe to fill the pond from the ‘water’ shaft.
The sides of the pond are approximately 1m above ground level along the south side, with a gap in the west end which may have sited the sluice gate. The west side of the pond has lower sides that are not so well defined, although the quality of the remains is generally good. Small trees are growing from the interior.

Cornwall Archaeological Unit, 2017, South Cornwall Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey Desk-Based Assessment, 546 (Interpretation). SDV360825.

A small square feature, possibly a reservoir, associated with the workings of an engine house (GAZ 158). The feature is recorded on the first and second edition 1:2500 Ordnance Survey maps. Modern mapping suggests that the feature could survive as an earthwork or small enclosure.
