Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

A sub-rectangular enclosure shown on 19th century map on the western side of Devon Great Consols Railway line (see PRN 3880) at the northern end of the incline (see PRN 72844) with a siding running into it from the south.

Buck, C., 2005, Wheal Russell Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 44 (Report - Assessment). SDV336659.

Site of a possible coal yard (Site 54) on the western side of Devon Great Consols Railway line (see PRN 3880) at the northern end of the incline (see PRN 72844). The feature shown on 19th century maps appears to be a walled yard with railway lines going to the boiler/engine house to the north (see PRNs 72849 & 72850) with some buildings in the southeastern part of the yard. The survey in 2005 found a 20 meter long wall up to 2.8 meters high x 0.45 meters thick. A small section of the eastern boundary wall was also visible.

Buck, C., 2009, Project Design for Site Trenching and Archaeological Recording of Former Buildings at the Morwellham Steam Incline Winder, Devon, Appendix; Site 54; Fig 2 (Report - non-specific). SDV366274.

The 1867 map shows railway lines going up to the boiler/engine house in the northern section of the track, with some buildings in the south eastern part of the yard next to the track.
The west boundary wall of the yard is extant for approximately 20m. It is the only visible surviving extant masonry in the entire Incline Winder complex. A small section of the east boundary wall is also extant, built to retain the higher level of the track bed from the lower surface of the yard.
