Full description

Buck, C., 2005, Wheal Russell Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 44-5 (Report - Assessment). SDV336659.

Site of one of the Costean Pits (Site 57) located along the course of lode outcrops at Wheal Russell Mine. The woodland running east to west to the north of Morwellham has many costean pits in the upper sections of the wood but hardly any evidence of deeper workings. The survey in 2005 found the pits had a regular profile being 3 meters long x 1 meter wide x 1 meter deep with a crescent shaped mound of spoil on the downslope side. As the lode was expected to run east to west the long side of the pits was cut north to south.
