Full description

Southwest Archaeology, 2005, Berry House Farm, Stoke, Hartland, Devon: Results of an Archaeological Desk-based Assessment and Survey of Buildings, 2.3, 5.9 (Report - Assessment). SDV323848.

First shown as a large east-west building on the Tithe Map of 1847 with a rounded extension on its north side. This appears to represent a horse engine house. This extension is not featured on the 1896 25 inch Ordnance survey map but is shown on the corresponding map of 1904. It is presumed the engine house had gone by the mid 20th century.
The present building is of random stone rubble with slit windows, two pairs of full height threshing doors and the remains of a slate flagged threshing floor. There is a loading door, now blocked, in the west gable. The roof structure is dated c1780-1850. A slit window between the doors to the north has been partially opened to take the drive shaft from a horse engine, the circular platform for which can still be seen.
