Kingsbridge originated as a market and a borough created by the Abbots of Buckfast in the 13th century. The layout of the burgage plots of Kingsbridge were shown in a plan of 1586 and remained unaltered until 1819. No 20 Fore Street, in the south-west quarter of the town, was a Buckfast Abbey property until the dissolution when it passed to the lords of the manor. The rear of No 20 Fore Street is a broad plot of land, apparently taking up two or three original burgage plots, and is bounded on the west by a leat which powered the Abbot's mill at the southern end of the town. It is accessed by a corridor between two shop fronts on Fore Street, and bounded by coursed rubble stone walls to the west and south, and a multi-sectioned wall to the north which includes cob, stone rubble and concrete with some slate capping. Other details: figures 2, 3a + 3b.
