Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • FARMHOUSE (XIX - 1801 AD to 1900 AD (Between))

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The Lamerton Tithe Map shows the farmhouse on the northern edge of the farmyard. The map is ripped at this location so it's possible this may show an earlier version of the house.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The late 19th century historic map shows the farmhouse, which appears largely the same as the Tithe Map depiction.

Dartmoor National Park Authority, 1993 - 1997, Dartmoor National Park Authority Farmstead Survey 1993-1997 (Report - Survey). SDV344544.

Farmhouse is probably 19th century in date. Comprised of two single depth blocks, the south-eastern block appears to pre-date the north-western block which is thought to be later 19th century. The blocks may have originally been separately occupied as they both have wash houses.

Wessex Archaeology, 2007, Historic Environment Audit of Devon County Farms. Pilot Project. Results of Prescombe Farm, Lydford, 18 (Report - Assessment). SDV338412.

Prescombe Farmhouse is shown on the 1884 Ordnance Survey map in its present square plan form. The north western half is of a later build style than the south eastern half suggesting that the house was extended prior to 1884. Cement rendered under twin-ridged slate roof. Other details: No 1414.

Ordnance Survey, 2017, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV359962.

Modern mapping shows the farmhouse in the centre of the extended farmstead.
