Full description

Historic England, 2017, National Heritage List for England, 1307002 (National Heritage List for England). SDV359963.

Hay Chest Tomb approximately 2 metres east of aisle of church of St Peter.
Chest tomb. Possibly dated 1628 in memory of William Hay. Purple volcanic ashlar with basalt lid. Rectangular in plan the sides are 3 bays separated by panelled pilasters. Each panel contains a plain oval medallion. Any plinth is now buried. Above is a broad moulded cornice and flat lid. The top of the lid is inscribed with Gothic lettering. However the inscription is very worn. The name of William Hay is legible and there appears to be the date 1628 in Roman numerals.
Date first listed: 17th March 1988.
