Full description

Watts, M., 2007, Archaeological Recording of Redundant Agricultural Buildings at Umberleigh Barton, Atherington, Devon, 11-12 (Report - Survey). SDV338893.

Double sided linhay aligned north-south. Ground floor divided lengthways by a stone and cob wall so that western half faces into a small square yard, whereas the east half faces an outer yard. Unclear if this central wall is original or an insertion. Hay loft on first floor runs full length and width of building. Supported on circular rubble stone and brick piers on east and west sides. North wall of stone and cob, with single storey extension. This extension, shown in plan on Tithe Map, was latterly used as a garage with modern up and over door. Has lean to corrugated metal roof. Two holes in cob above may indicate line of an earlier more steeply pitched roof. South wall of linhay is open at ground and first floor levels with gable end of former half hipped roof now clay with timber boards. Roof construction of interest with A-frame trusses at the gable ends and 3 scissor braces trusses between. Possibly of 18th century date. See report for full details. Other details: B5 on figures and photos.
